Video Recording Systems

University Hospital Llandough – Medical Education Centre

Requirements

After a successful cSkills installation at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) wanted to implement our recording solution as part of a refurbishment to the medical education centre at the University Hospital Llandough. The refurbishment included 3 seminar rooms, a 3-bedded ward area, resus room and control room.

The main requirements of the project included:

  • Provide recording facilities in the various areas including ward area, resus room and each of the seminar rooms
  • Implement an easy to use system to allow the recording of different areas simultaneously from the control room
  • Additional wall mounted displays that replicate the image from the projector, improving coverage throughout the room
  • Have the ability to de-brief trainees with video playback, or observe live a simulation, from both the control room and each of the 3 seminar rooms

The Solution

Working with the main building contractor, we specified the required power and data cabling which would be required to meet the client’s requirements prior to installation, and ensured there was suitable containment routes for our cabling to ensure a clean finish after installation was complete.

  • Seminar Rooms - Each seminar has a 65” 4K Sedao display connected to a cSkills Streamer (for live viewing and playback). The seminar rooms also feature a single PTZ camera and dropdown ceiling microphones so that the de-brief sessions can be recorded
  • 3-Bed Ward Area - Features 2 x fixed angle Axis PTZ cameras allowing a variety of views and angles of the 3 beds in the ward area. Audio capture is provided by drop down ceiling microphones feeding back to a local mixer in the room. An input point is provided at each bedside to provide the ability to connect a vital signs feed
  • Resus Room - Features 2 x fixed angle Axis PTZ cameras allowing a variety of views and angles of the 3 beds in the ward area. Audio capture is provided by drop down ceiling microphones feeding back to a local mixer in the room. An input point is provided at the bedside to provide the ability to connect a vital signs feed
  • Control Room - Features a cSkills control laptop and 43” wall mounted display where an operator can observe, invoke recordings and operate the cameras throughout the suite. A talkback microphone allows communication to the ward and resus room via a speaker in each area

Summary

The system in place now provides a flexible and easy way to record, view live, and playback to aid in simulation and training throughout the medical education centre. Various camera groups (up to 4 cameras or streams) were set up initially for each room, the streams of which can be viewed in full screen or a quad split.

cSkills is an IP based system, so changing or adding to the streams that are available within a group is a straightforward process. This provides a great degree of future proofing and flexibility allowing the system to adapt and change as the needs of the suite evolve.
